Thanks to the wonders of the internet, this gives me a chance to make amends for the grammatical errors and other howlers that I commit in my weekly column in the Daily Telegraph...with thanks to those readers who have taken the trouble to keep me on the straight and narrow.

1. L'hectare

"Récemment, vous avez écrit 'le hectare'. Erreur ! It has to be l'hectare, just like l'homme, l'horreur, l'hôtel and l'hôpital : H mute. The word behaves just as if it began with a vowel). Plural : les hommes (avec la liaison) etc.unlike le haricot, le hibou, le Hollandais & la Hollande : H aspirate, where the full form of the article must be used.  Plural : les haricots (surtout pas de liaison dans ce cas) ! J'espère que c'est plus clair pour vous maintenant. Il n'y  a pas de régle, si on ne sait pas, il faut vérifier le mot. La voyelle qui suit le H ne décide en rien du H muet ou du H aspiré!"
